Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains account for most common sports injuries amongst children. The stretch and tear of ligaments that support ankles cause these injuries.

These injuries occur mostly while playing the sports where more foot movement along with cutting and twisting actions is required like; soccer, tennis, basketball, tennis, and football.

Due to ankle sprains, your child can experience bruising, instability, pain, tenderness and swelling.

Little League Elbow

Repetitive stress to the growth place located on the inside of a child’s elbow causes Little league elbow. Due to this condition, your young athlete can feel tenderness and pain in the area.

This problem is common among baseball and softball players who are catcher, infielder, pitcher, outfielder and infielder. Other sports that demand repetitive throwing can also lead to this problem.

Osgood-Schlatter

Osgood-Schlatter is a kind of knee pain but is different from ACL tear. It is a kind of traction or stretch injury that occurs to the growth plate at the top of the shin bone known as an apophysis.

High activity levels coupled with tightness in the muscles are the due causes of this injury. This injury may cause swelling and pain or at times, a bump at the bottom of the knee.

ACL Tears

One of the major ligaments that provides stability to the knee joint is Anterior Cruciate Ligament(ACL). The tibia is connected to the femur with the help of this joint.

A child may suffer an ACLtear because of a blow to the outside of the knee or after sudden jump or twist. The kids who play volleyball, soccer, tennis and basketball, this injury is common to them.

An ACL tear may show symptoms including; swelling, pain and limited movement in the knee.

Little League Shoulder

This injury is similar to little league elbow only with the difference that it affects the child’s shoulder. A child may suffer this injury due to repetitive stress or a small trauma to the shoulder growth plate.

This is a recurrent kind of injury among the age group of eleven to fourteen. Softball and baseball pitchers often suffer from this injury but if your child is a swimmer or tennis player, there are chances that he may also fall victim to this injury.

Shin Splints

When your child is an athlete and participates in sports involving repetitive running on hard surfaces, he is surely more prone to this injury as compared to others.

Overtraining at the season beginning without proper conditioning can inflict this injury. This injury can cause discomfort and pain on the front of the lower legs.(the shins).

Spondylolysis

A stress fracture to the lumbar spine is known as Spondylolysis. When repeated stress from compression or tension breaks a bone, stress fracture occurs.

This injury is most common in the lower back area. Most of the young athletes who participate in track and field games or sports like; gymnastics, tennis, weight lifting and rowing.

Turf Toe

The hyperextension of the big toe is, turf toe. A young athlete can experience this injury when he pushes off of the ground forcefully with his big toe being forced upward.

Interestingly, this injury gets its name from American football that is played on artificial turf but that is not the only sport where the athlete can suffer this injury.

But, any sport that makes an athlete push off forcefully to run or jump can be accounted for this troublesome condition. Pain in the toe in the most important indicator of this sports injury but some cases may witness swelling as well.

Concussion

Concussion is one of the tormenting sports injuries in children. Concussion can occur in any sport due to the direct blow to the head. If your kid suffers this kind of blow any time while playing a sport, be watchful for the symptoms including; blurred vision, confusion, headaches or dizziness.
