Tips for Diabetic patients

  • Inspect both feet daily, including the area between the toes. Ask a caregiver to do this if you are unable to.
  • Wash the feet daily with water at room temperature, with careful drying, especially between the toes.
  • Use lubricating oils or creams for dry skin, but not between the toes.
  • Cut nails straight across.
  • Do not remove corns and calluses using a chemical agent or plaster. They should not be excised at home and must be managed by trained staff.
  • Always wear socks with shoes and check inside shoes for foreign objects before wearing them.
  • Avoid walking barefoot at all times.
  • Ensure a qualified healthcare provider examines your feet regularly.
  • Notify the healthcare provider at once if a blister, cut, scratch, or sore develops.

 

Introduction

Feet are often the most ignored and taken for granted part of the body, when infact they need a lot of care and appropriate wear to prevent early wear and tear. Foot is a biomechanically complex structure with many components, and any alteration in any of the components can lead to unfavourable consequences resulting in pain, ulcer, or gradually developing major deformities. This is especially true in case of Diabetics where due to multiple factors the biomechanical stability of foot is damaged. Incidence of Diabetes is on the rise and in Punjab alone the prevalence is estimated to be around 8.3%. Major foot ulcerations are seen in 12 % of diabetic population and minor early stage problems and neuropathy in a much larger population.

5. Diabetic Foot Care

Having diabetes can increase the risk of developing a wide range of foot problems. These problems can develop as a result of the decrease in circulation & damage to the nerves (peripheral neuropathy) that can occur from long term high blood sugars. Thus, diabetic population need to pay special attention to their feet. In diabetes simple foot problems such as blisters, corns, callus, cracked heels, bunions, Ingrown toe nails can place a diabetic foot at risk of complications like ulcers, gangrene, cellulites can lead up to amputation. India is second capital of diabetes & everyone amongst four people is having diabetic foot problem.
