Hand Reimplantation

Hand Reimplantation is a highly specialised surgery which involves joining back one or both hands of the body that is completely cut away from it due to some accident or any mishappening. A plastic and reconstructive surgeon performs this surgery with special training in microsurgery, which is most commonly done by using microscope magnification.

How should it be done?

  • When one or both hands are cut away from the arms, there should be no delay in getting the patient to a specialised centre for hand reimplantation.
  • The detached part of the hand has to be wrapped in a clean cloth and placed in a plastic cover.
  • Then waste no time putting the part into a box of ice to protect it from deteriorating.
  • The cut stump must be dressed with a pressure dressing and immediately shifted to a higher centre where a specialised surgeon can operate.

The chance of success of the surgery depends mainly on the type of injury. In a clean cut, like with a knife, the success rate of surgery becomes higher, nearly around 90%, whereas in machine injuries and where a part has been pulled out from the body, the chance of success of the surgery is much lower. But remember that any body part can be fixed back to its original place with proper preservation, timely presentation and immediate action.

At Amandeep Hospital, we have a special care ward for such cases, and we have doctors readily available around the clock to start the treatment without wasting time. We assess the matter and take measures for surgery. The removed part should be with you when you consult a doctor so they have started the surgery without wasting any second. We have a team of expert doctors that will help you to get your body back to normal.
