Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that enhances the body’s natural healing process by inhaling 100% oxygen in a total body chamber, where the atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is used for a variety of treatments that are part of an overall medical care plan.

With HBOT, oxygen is dissolved into the body’s fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system fluids, the lymph, and the bone. It is carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. In this way, extra oxygen can reach the related damaged tissues and the body can support its healing process.

The increased oxygen helps the white blood cells to kill bacteria, reduces swelling, and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into the affected areas.

The treatment is administered in hyperbaric chambers and involves the circulation of pure oxygen.

Reason for doing HBOT

Your body’s tissues need an adequate supply of oxygen to function accurately. When the tissue is injured, it requires even more oxygen to survive and function. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the source to increase the oxygen level in your blood.

With repeated scheduled treatments, the high oxygen levels enhance the normal tissue oxygen levels that are used for healing internal diseases.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to cure several medical conditions. Your doctor may suggest hyperbaric oxygen therapy if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Severe anemia
  • Brain abscess
  • Bubbles of air in your blood vessels.
  • Burns
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Crushing injury
  • Sudden Deafness
  • Decompression sickness
  • Gangrene
  • Infection of skin or bone that causes tissue death
  • Non-healing wounds, such as a diabetic foot ulcer
  • Radiation causing injury
  • Skin graft at risk of tissue death
  • Brain injury
  • Vision loss, both sudden and painless

How should patients prepare for treatment?

Clean cotton clothing is preferred in the chamber. Any sort of cosmetics, perfumes, hair preparations, deodorants, wigs, or jewelry are not allowed in the chamber. The technician needs to know if any type of medications that include non-prescription drugs are being taken by the patient.

The patients are advised not to take alcohol or carbonated drinks for four hours before treatment. In most cases, patients should quit smoking along with other tobacco products during their treatment period, as they interfere with the body’s ability to transport oxygen.

Different types of HBOT chambers

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is usually performed as an outpatient procedure that can also be provided while you are hospitalized. There are two types of hyperbaric oxygen chambers:

1 – A unit designed for 1 person

In an individual unit, you lie down on a table that slides into a clear plastic chamber.

2 – A room designed to accommodate several people

A multi-person hyperbaric oxygen room looks like a large hospital room where you can sit or lie down. You will receive oxygen through a mask that is covering your face.

What to expect during HBOT?

During HBOT, the air pressure in the room is adjusted to two to three times the normal air pressure. The increased air pressure creates a temporary feeling of fullness in your ears. You will get relief from that feeling either by yawning or swallowing.

In most conditions, hyperbaric oxygen therapy lasts approximately 60 to 90 minutes. The health care team will monitor you and the therapy unit throughout the ongoing treatment.

What to expect after HBOT?

Your therapy team performs a thorough check-up by looking in your ears and taking your blood pressure and pulse. If you have diabetes, your blood glucose is also checked. Once the team decides you are fine, then you can get dressed and leave.

The later effect can be seen in the form of tiredness or feeling of hunger after your treatment. However, this does not affect normal activities.

Related Risks of HBOT technique

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is generally a safe procedure with rare complications and some risk.

The related risks include:

  • Middle ear injuries, including leaking fluid and eardrum rupture, due to changes in air pressure.
  • Temporary nearsightedness is caused by the changes in eye lens.
  • Lung collapse is caused by changes in air pressure.
  • Seizures as a result of too much oxygen in your central nervous system.
  • Low blood sugar in people having diabetes treated with insulin.

You can check the related FAQs below to find answers to more questions:

1 – How is HBOT effective?

From Amandeep Group of Hospitals: “Normally, most of the oxygen circulating in the body is carried by the red blood cells. Hyperbaric oxygen dissolves extra oxygen into the plasma. The total oxygen carried to the tissues is about 10 times more than breathing air. The increase in oxygen concentration promotes the healing of certain wounds.”

2 – What are the benefits of HBOT ?

It has been known that healing many areas of the body cannot take place without appropriate oxygen levels in the tissue. Therefore, most illnesses and injuries occur and often linger. In many cases, such as circulatory problems, non-healing wounds, and strokes, adequate oxygen cannot reach the damaged area due to which the body’s natural healing ability is unable to function properly.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy provides this extra oxygen naturally and with minimal side effects. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves the quality of life of the patient in many areas when standard medicine does not work.

Many conditions such as stroke, cerebral palsy, head injuries, and chronic fatigue have responded favorably to HBOT.

3 – Is HBOT safe?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is prescribed by a doctor and thus performed under proper medical supervision. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is extremely safe compared to other medical treatments. The related risks will be updated to you so you can be aware of them and act accordingly.

4 – How often do most people receive HBOT treatment?

The number of sessions is dependent upon your present medical condition. Some conditions like carbon monoxide poisoning might be treated in three visits. Other conditions, such as non-healing wounds, may require 40 HBOT treatments or more.

To effectively treat approved medical conditions, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a part of a treatment plan provided with other therapies and drugs that are designed to fit your needs.

5 – What are the side effects of HBOT?

Some people report vision changes after long-term treatments, though the vision returns to normal within three to four months after the treatment ends. There is a chance that HBOT could contribute to the worsening of cataracts.
