Tobacco is a significant risk factor in the development of these cancers. Treatment of these cancers requires a team approach, with a cancer surgeon removing the affected part and plastic surgeon to reconstruct the significant defect created. Different methods of reconstructing the removed defect, depending on which structure is removed. Thick skin from thigh or forearm is removed along with its blood supply and used to reconstruct soft tissues like tongue, cheek, or floor of the mouth, depending on the case.
The blood vessels are joined to the arteries and veins in the neck. In case of bone defect, like jaw bone, a bone from the leg called the fibula is taken along with its blood supply similarly and joined to neck vessels.

These are advanced microsurgical procedures requiring specialized training, performed by plastic and reconstructive surgeons.
