Hair loss is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide and is caused by hormonal changes, aging, family history, and trauma such as burns. It typically progresses more rapidly in those who start losing hair earlier. Hair replacement surgery or hair transplantation may be an excellent option for reconstructive treatment.

For people who have experienced severe hair loss, hair transplantation offers the only proven way to restore natural hair growth. In addition, recent advancements have made the surgical procedure less invasive and more comfortable for patients, allowing them to return home within one day instead of the several weeks it used to take.

The latest hair transplant procedures have resulted in high patient satisfaction and natural-looking results. However, the cost of the procedure is worth the outcome, according to patients.

Surgical hair transplantation involves two basic methods: The extraction of follicular unit extraction(FUE) and the transplantation of the Follicular unit (FUT). Your preference and your physician’s recommendation will determine which method is suitable for you.

Types of Hair Transplant

All About FUE

A follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant is a permanent solution to balding. A specialist extracts hair from the donor area and begins making small incisions. Once the recipient site is determined, your doctor implants the harvested follicular units into each incision. You’ll start seeing results in about six months, with full benefits appearing in a year.

This surgical hair transplant procedure involves removing strips of hair from areas of the scalp with good growth and transplanting them into areas that are thinning or bald. This procedure requires shaving the donor site, but you can discuss it with the patient before proceeding.

The procedure doesn’t leave visible scarring, making it ideal for patients who wear or may want to wear shorter hairstyles. However, the entire treatment generally takes under two hours, and you can expect some redness and soreness afterward. It would be best to avoid vigorous scrubbing of the area and swimming, but you can easily wash your hair later with your regular shampoo and conditioner routine.

All About FUT

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) is more invasive and lengthy than FUE. Still, it is often the preferred method for patients with sufficient donor hair to cover one long scar across their scalp. In FUT, a strip of hair-bearing scalp is removed from the donor site, and smaller follicular units are individually removed from the strip and then transplanted to the recipient area.
With this method, there is no need for shaving of the donor area with this method, but patients do have one long scar across their scalp. For these reasons, FUT is sometimes preferred for patients with longer hair (which can cover the scar) and who don’t want a drastic change in their appearance.

In a FUT hair transplant, the surgeon removes a linear strip of hair-bearing scalp from the back of your head. The extracted strip is then split into individual sections, or follicular units, which are prepped for implantation into the thinning or balding areas.

Difference Between FUE & FUT

While this hair restoration method has been around for over two decades, it was the original method for creating a natural-looking hairline, and it provided previously unachievable results. But over time, doctors began to notice that it was not without its drawbacks.

The incision is made horizontally across the back of the head, even as it crosses the scalp’s natural growth pattern, leading to unnatural-looking hair growth and making it difficult to style one’s hair. And while this technique provides an excellent opportunity to achieve a good result, there is no way to avoid the resulting linear scar on the back of the head. In addition, while healing from this procedure, patients need to take care of both the incision and the donor sites which are used to harvest hairs for grafting and any other wounds or postoperative complications that may arise during recovery.

A new hair-transplant technique, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), was developed to address the disadvantages of Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT).

Although the FUE technique involves more time in the operating room than the FUT procedure, the FUE method produces less visible scarring and requires less advanced wound care. Additionally, the FUE method causes patients less downtime and lowers post-procedure discomfort levels.

In recent years, innovators have focused on developing new options for hair restoration that offer optimal benefits while minimizing the drawbacks.

BIO FUE hair restoration is an example of these advancements.

BIO FUE is a minimally invasive FUE technique that automates harvesting and implantation to reduce procedure time, lessen discomfort, increase take rate, and minimize downtime compared with traditional FUE. In addition, compared to linear scarring that occurs with other FUE techniques, BIO FUE creates virtually invisible incisions, resulting in more natural-looking results.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia to reduce discomfort and extracts individual hair follicles from the back and sides of the head using the BIO FUE system. It then places the hair follicles in the thinning area of the scalp in a natural pattern, as normal activity can be resumed in a matter of days. Results begin to show over the next few months as the hair growth cycle begins.

Since there are no needles, the FUE procedure heals faster and is less discomfort. As you can see above, an FUE hair transplant is more preferred than FUT because it provides better results, no pain/discomfort, no scarring and is generally more effective.
