Stalwarts of Plastic Surgery Unite Under One Roof as Amritsar Hosts APSICON 2022

Sushruta, the Indian sage, is reverently known as the “Father of Plastic Surgery”. His comprehensive work called Sushruta Samhita (Sushruta’s Compendium) is considered the oldest known text on plastic surgery.

It is incredible to realise how much the field of plastic surgery has evolved over the years. And how plastic surgeons can now provide solutions for problems once thought impossible to treat. To further promote and direct the development of Plastic Surgery, the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (APSI) conducts many conferences and sessions.

The Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (APSI) is a national-level organisation that brings together some of the most brilliant minds in Plastic & Reconstructive surgery. APSICON is one of the many relentless efforts of the association to ameliorate the field of plastic surgery.

For the first time, Amritsar boasted of conducting the National Conference of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (APSICON), representing more than 2000 Plastic Surgeons from all across the country.

This is only the second time APSICON was held in Punjab, with the first organised at Patiala 40 years back! The Department of Plastic Surgery at Amandeep Hospitals organised APSICON 2022, Amritsar, from 9 to 13 November under the diligent leadership of Dr. Ravi K. Mahajan, the President of the APSI and the organising Chairman of the event.

The five-day conference’s affairs happened at the captivating Guru Nanak Dev University campus, which has a novel, world-class auditorium complex surrounded by lush green lawns and playgrounds.

The grandiose inauguration ceremony for APSICON 2022 took place at Guru Nanak Bhavan, Guru Nanak Dev University, on 10 November. Several eminent personalities were present at this momentous opening ceremony.

Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar (Honourable Minister of Local Bodies Government of Punjab) arrived as the Chief Guest, while Dr. Giyani Girdhar (Director General, Association of Health Care Providers) and Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu (Vice-Chancellor, GNDU, Amritsar) graced the event as Guests of Honour.

During the ensuing days of the conference, there were hands-on workshops, masterclasses and surgical video workshops to benefit trainee Plastic Surgeons. Over 400 research papers on various aspects of Plastic Surgery were also presented.
APSICON’s primary focus was upskilling Plastic Surgeons and raising awareness surrounding Plastic Surgery amongst the masses. Interestingly, there were numerous informative, operative video workshops on burns and craniofacial surgery. There were also many illuminating sessions on Aesthetics, Head & Neck, Hands, Lower Extremity Trauma, and Genital Surgery.

This year, it was the very first time in history that the ISAPS (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) Symposium was a part of APSICON. Thus, world-renowned National & International Plastic Surgeons attended the conference and taught several nuances of aesthetic surgery to trainee surgeons.

Amazingly, APSICON 2022 was attended by 700+ Plastic Surgeons from various parts of the country. And there were about twenty attendee Plastic Surgeons from all across the world, including the UK, Australia, USA, Europe and Dubai. The latest developments in the fields of reconstructive and aesthetic surgery were deliberated upon in the meetings.

But it wasn’t all about academic stuff! APSICON had a bunch of fun activities, social events and tours, delivering an all-inclusive learning extravaganza. As the five-year conference proceeded, participants had the chance to enjoy themselves during the cricket night, Plasticos Got Talent (A talent show), Gala Dinner and Banquet.

It is gratifying to know that APSICON 2022 served as a huge platform for all plastic surgeons to come together and discuss the latest developments in their field and share their experiences.

Furthermore, it is a matter of great pride for Amandeep Hospital and the holy city of Amritsar that such a grand event occurred here. The organising committee was all geared up to make it a success as the conference was being held in physical mode after a long hiatus of three years.
